5 Reasons to Visit Istria this Summer

5 Reasons to Visit Istria this Summer

You know how we are always looking for undiscovered travel destinations and off the beaten track trips?

Well, this summer, we had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Istria, an undiscovered strawberry-shaped peninsula off the northern end of Croatia’s Adriatic coastline.

This region has something for everyone, from award-winning beaches to acclaimed gastronomy (prime truffles, fresh seafood and amazing olive oil), and some of Croatia’s most attractive coastal towns. Not convinced yet? Here are the 5 reasons why you should absolutely visit Istria this summer.

1. Truffle hunting

If you are a truffle lover like us, then Istria is definitely the place for you! It is the only region, together with Italy, where you can find rare white truffles together with the black truffle, thanks to the favourable weather conditions of the region. We think truffle hunting is an unmissable experience if you are visiting Istria, which will give you the opportunity to learn more about this culinary delicacy and experience firsthand a hunt in the forest with the cutest doggies.

For more information, you can contact the friendly family-owned Karlić tartufi, who will tell you all about their truffle history and make you try Radmila’s tastiest truffle omelette!

2. Rich cultural heritage

As some of you may know, Istria’s geographical setting has had a big influence on the region’s cultural heritage. This is a place where Germanic, Slavic and Romanic cultures have all played an important role into shaping Istria’s identity. The Roman domination explains the bilingual nature of this region (most people speak Italian as a second language) and has left an Italian imprinting in terms of architecture, food and culture.

The greatest example is probably the Pula Amphitheatre, which is one of the 6 largest Roman Amphitheatres in the world. This majestic building is incredibly well preserved and was used for gladiator fights. Today, it is open for sightseeing and summer concerts.

3. Picturesque villages

Istria has some of the most colourful and picturesque villages in the world, which will make you feel almost as if you were in a movie set! According to many, Rovinj is considered to be the most beautiful town of the entire Croatia. With its beautiful port, cobblestone streets and lively bars and restaurants, this town is perfect for a romantic getaway and is one of the most photogenic places you will ever see.

Other than Rovinj, Istria has many other pretty towns to get lost in. The fishing town of Novigrad, for example, is very popular amongst tourists because of its irresistible Mediterranean charm, while Motovun is a hillside town that very much resembles the beautiful hills of Tuscany.

4. Great food and wine

Istrian cuisine will enchant you with its Mediterranean flavours and variety of dishes. You will find the freshest seafood paired with the most delicious Malvasia wine on the coastline and hearty meat and truffles in the centre of the region. Also, the finest Croatian olive oil is produced in this region, so it is worth visiting one of the many local producers, who will be happy to tell you all their secrets.

In terms of restaurants, it is definitely worth trying Libeccio restaurant in Novigrad for its delicious seafood and beautiful view over the sea and Lanterna restaurant on St. Andrew Island, which is located in an old castle with a terrace right on the seafront. Lanterna is a true hidden gem (it has only five reviews on TripAdvisor!) that serves 5 star food with an amazing service, and it is reachable by boat from Rovinj.

5. Crystal clear water and beautiful weather

Istria can boast a wonderful Mediterranean weather with warm and dry summers and mild winters, making this region a lovely touristic destination all year round. There are many hidden coves and pebbled beaches, together with beautiful diving sites. Our suggestion is to rent a bike in Rovinj and cycle along the coast to find your perfect spot, it is an unforgettable experience!
